Move-In Receptions

Move-In Day is such an exciting time for students and families alike! But, it can be hard work to get your student's belongings moved in. We want to celebrate with you and provide an opportunity for families to have a space to relax, enjoy some complementary snacks and refreshments, and even get to informally meet some Student Affairs administrators during our Move-In Receptions.

Followed by:
Fighting Illini Football vs. Arizona State at 6 pm
Memorial Stadium

Join us this fall as the Illini Union Parent Programs Office and the Moms and Dads Associations Boards of Directors throw a Fall Welcome for parents and their students. This is a great opportunity to visit your student on campus, sometimes for the first time since you moved them in. Bring your student and join us in the Illini Union for tailgate-style appetizers and refreshments, a meet and greet with University administrators, and to spend some fun time with your student! Make it a day by purchasing tickets for the football game following the Fall Welcome. Tickets can be purchased through the Athletic Ticket Office.

Dads Weekend 2011

Dads Weekend insignia

Dads Weekend at the University of Illinois will be held November 11 - 13, 2011. There is no registration for the weekend; families may come to campus and select whichever events they would like to attend. Some events require advance ticket purchase. We will post a calendar of events this fall with a listing of everything happening on campus.

The Dads Association sponsors two main events:

Dads Annual Banquet - Friday, November 11, 5 pm Reception, 5:30 pm Dinner
Dads Pre-Game BBQ - Saturday, November 12, 2 hrs before kickoff of Michigan vs. Illinois football game.

Phyllis M. Wise named to lead Urbana campus as Chancellor

Phyllis Wise, Chancellor

Phyllis M. Wise has been selected to be chancellor of the Urbana campus and serve as a UI vice president. Wise, who is provost and executive vice president at the University of Washington, will assume her duties Oct. 1, pending approval by the UI Board of Trustees at its September meeting.

Wise has served in senior leadership roles at three major public research universities. She has been at the University of Washington since 2005 and served as interim president during the 2010-11 academic year. From 2002-2005, she was the dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of California at Davis.

Quad Day

Quad Day is an exciting annual event held in the fall before classes begin. It is held to expose students to the diverse opportunities available for becoming involved in the campus community, student organizations, university departments and community agencies. It's a fun way to kick off the fall semester, especially for students looking to get involved outside of the classroom! Encourage your student to attend!

Numbers of women, minorities in math, science don't add up

A new study by a scholar at the University of Illinois suggests that the U.S. may not be falling as far behind its industrialized peers in educating future generations of scientists as previously thought. Significantly more female and minority college students are majoring in and obtaining degrees in science, technology, engineering and math fields than reports have indicated if these disciplines, known by the acronym STEM, are viewed broadly.

Previous studies on differential participation rates in STEM emphasized female and minority underrepresentation by focusing on a single major or a narrow set of high-profile STEM majors such as computer science and engineering.
