Illini Union Parent Programs Office
The Assistant to the Director of the Illini Union, the Program Manager, and the Program Advisor for the Illini Union Parent Programs office serve as liaisons between the Moms and Dads Associations and the University. The Illini Union Parent Programs Office (IUPPO) collaborates with the Moms and Dads Associations to co-sponsor events and programs that benefit all Illinois parents and families.

IUPPO Mission:
The mission of the Illini Union Parent Programs Office, in collaboration with the Moms Association and Dads Association, is to help U of I parents and families develop the skills necessary to become effective coaches and mentors to their students by providing high-quality, accessible communications, tools, resources and services. Our goal is to build long-term relationships with U of I families, students and the University that promote a positive "Illinois Experience".
History
The Moms and Dads Associations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have the distinction of being the two oldest parent organizations in the nation, established in 1923 and 1922 respectively. In May 2007, the Associations agreed to eliminate the membership fee requirement and welcomed all parents and families of U of I students as members at no cost. The Illini Union Parent Programs Office works in collaboration with the Moms and Dads Associations to deliver high-quality, relevant, and useful programming and communications to help families navigate the evolving relationship with their emerging adult child. We strive to see U of I students succeed, and our goal is to establish a productive parent-University partnership with University of Illinois families.
We want you and your family to have the best possible experience while your student is attending Illinois. In order to be successful partners, we have established outcomes for U of I parents and an outline of our role in helping you reach those goals.
Expected Parent Outcomes:
- Understand the developmental changes parents and families experience when children embark on their own collegiate careers.
- Be an effective mentor and coach for your college student.
- Understand the college experience your student is having in today's higher education environment.
- Establish the appropriate level of involvement in your student's collegiate career that is beneficial to you, your child and the University community. Know when and how to empower your student to take responsibility, enabling them to grow into a mature, productive and independent adult.
Role of the Parent Programs Office & Moms and Dads Associations:
- Communicate regularly with parents of all U of I students, developing a critical parent-University partnership.
- Educate parents to their new role as the parent of a college student and how that evolving role affects their development as a parent; including how their lives are changing and examining how they are feeling and thinking.
- Provide parents of U of Istudents with the information and tools they need to become effective mentors and coaches to their college students throughout their collegiate career; for example, how to distinguish between normal and worrisome behavior.
- Provide volunteer opportunities for parents and families that keep them connected to the University community and encourage the development of relationships among fellow Illini parents/families, the University and the Moms and Dads Associations.
